Vancouverites Organizing BarCamps in China

When we were working on organizing BarCamp Vancouver 07, I found out that Kris Krug and http://robertscales.org/ were working on organizing BarCamp Beijing and BarCamp Shanghai.

Being curious, in several ways, I wrote them asking how they got involved and why they were helping out. Scales responded:

It was out of the blue last year, KK and I knew we where going back to china for the second time and that we'd be back in 2007 and 2008

One of Raincity's clients China Access 2008 has been helping us bridging the Chinese market and we wanted to push the envelope and do something ground breaking.. We recruited the help of Jon Hancock and a few other Chinese and ex-patriots and set the wheels in motion. To our surprise, over 80 peeps showed up at the first ever BarCamp in China in Shanghai.

We had said that we'd help organize one in Beijing this year and offered to take the lead if no one was going to. So when we solidified our China plan earlier this summer, we decided to go ahead and do 2 camps and kind of merge the whole thing (makes it easier for organizing and sponsorship: Sponsor are in for both camps in China for the price of one ;) )

I have been doing hte bulk of the logistics planning, sorting out spaces, sponsorship, food etc, with the help of a few people on the ground. Kris has taken the lead with the promotion and rallying attendees etc.

We expect 100+ in shanghai and under 100 in Beijing..

But the word is getting out and as we sort out the details, we are seeing more people register…

It's another way of meeting new people, build a network and share what we know..
