Ubuntu Live 07: Mark Shuttleworth's Keynote
It is relatively early on a Sunday morning. I'm in Portland sitting in Mark Shuttleworth's opening keynote for Ubuntu Live 2007.
At a glance, I'd estimate that there are about 240 people in the audience - great attendance for the first edition of an event.
Mark's keynote is surprising, but not in the way that one might typically expect a keynote to be surprising. Instead, the surprise is that Mark is presenting a state of and vision for Canonical and Ubuntu that seems to be going according much to the original vision for Ubuntu.
I first heard about Canonical and Ubuntu at OSCON in 2004. Benjamin Mako Hill had just started with Canonical and was tremendously excited about the company and the project. Mako described a company that hoped to build a robust, free GNU/Linux distribution and that would work to support a true ecology around the distribution that would include everyone from hackers to non-profits to schools to small business to massive enterprises.
While I'm sure that the inside details at Canonical are as messy as they are with any other venture, it is good to hear that they are staying the course.
