This Week

Many small tasks. Worked on my Go Open 2008 keynote (slides are at http://www.slideshare.net/zakgreant/go-open-08-floss-what-and-why). Minor administrative work. Got ready for travelling to Go Open 2008 in Oslo. Chased after various [...]

Speaking at OSCON 2008

I'm happy to report that I'll be presenting two sessions at OSCON 2008. The first session is called, "Greening the Conference Circuit" and the second is my (now-)usual Age of Literate Machines presentation.

This year, I'll be at OSCON on behalf of the Mozilla Foundation. In addition to attending the main conference, I'll also be attending the FLOSS Foundations meetings, the Open Source Initiative meetings and participating in a revamped version of OSCamp.

If you read my post on getting the most out of conference attendance, you know that I'm trying to reduce the environmental costs associated with my conference attendance. I even made a plan. As with most plans, real life is a bit different. Here's how I've done:

Taxi from home to YVR (I would have taken [...]

Conference Report: OpenMind & MindTrek 2007

OpenMind 2007 and MindTrek 2007 were excellent mid-sized (400+ participants) tech events that brought together a great mix of people - academics, working developers, activists, senior IT management, public servants, industry veterans, innovators and even pirates [0].
Some presentations were lackluster, but the informal discussions were awesome. There [...]

OpenMind 2007: Standardization, Industry-Community Cooperations and Mobile Linux

After Carlos, Nils Faerber from LiPS (a Linux telephony consortium that includes telephony operators, hardware vendors and software vendors) takes the stage.
Nils looks much more like we image an Open Source developer to look - more like a character from User Friendly than a character from Dilbert.
He gives a high-level overview of the current state [...]

At the last FLOSS Foundations meeting, Brian Behlendorf mentioned the upcoming Craigslist Foundation Non-Profit Boot Camp.
The event is focused on helping people develop the skills and connections needed to help them run a successful non-profit.
Brian attended the event two years ago and found it a good use of his time.
I'm certainly interested in going, but [...]

Calling All Vancouver Technical Writers: Uncle eZ Needs You!

Hrm. I am not so sure that "Uncle eZ" is such a good metaphor. However, the first part of the title stands: eZ needs a talented technical editor to work out of our Vancouver office.

Primary responsibilities include editing technical material (such as articles and books). Secondary responsibilities include providing editing services for all departments in [...]
