SCALE 6x: Wrapup - People

While I met a lot of great people at SCALE  (Michael, Moose, Sharon and a host more) I had generally interesting non-private discussions with (or observations about) the following:

Allison Randal - OSCON co-chair and Parrot architect - gave a great presentation on Parrot and an excellent  low-stress guide to effective speaking. We also spent some [...]

SCALE 6x: Getting Back

By Sunday morning, SCALE had wound down. Various participants were scattered around the hotel lobby – chatting about the previous days, waiting for shuttles with their bags and napping after a few to many late night discussions. Outside the hotel, a small army of police had gathered in the wake of an unfortunate window-washer falling [...]

New Pitches for the Lab with Leo

My work at the Mozilla Foundation is, not surprisingly, focused on advancing the Mozilla Manifesto.

Planning my SCALE 6x Attendance

In about a week, I'll be heading down to Los Angeles to participate in SCALE 6x, the sixth annual Southern California Linux Expo. In addition to visiting the event, I'll be giving my Age of Literate Machines presentation, updated for 2008 and supported by more research. I'll be joining another Mozillion - Chris Blizzard, who [...]

20000 km, $7000, 7 days and 4 tons of CO2

… or, "Making Event Attendance Count"
Late last year, I gave a keynote at paired Finnish conferences MindTrek and OpenMind. While the events were well worth attending, afterwards I spent a few bleak hours thinking about the actual costs of my attendance. If I had left Canada just for these events (which, thankfully, I [...]
