Session Abstract: Open Innovation and Open Source

I’ve worked up this abstract for a session that I’ll present at Stefan Doeblin’s Leadership by (Open) Innovation in the Telecom, IT and Media Industries – an event to be held in Munich on April 24th, 2008. While at the event, I’ll also be participating in a panel titled, “Beyond Methods, Processes, and Tools: The Fundamental Drivers to Succeed in Open Innovation”I’ll post additional information as I work on the session.

Open Innovation and Open Source: Lessons Learned in the Mozilla Community

Brief Summary

The power of Open Source comes from its ability to enable distributed innovation. In this thirty minute session, Mozilla Foundation Ombudsman Zak Greant explains the effects and key dynamics of open source and the Mozilla community, and how they relate to open innovation and disruptive change.

Sweet. I just submitted a proposal for a talk at OSCON (to be given with Chris Beard) that might be informed some by your talk. I’ll be watching as you get the talk together.

    here’s the proposal I submitted:

    >Over the years, many have said what Open Source cannot do. They’ve said that
    >Open Source cannot design great user experience, cannot appeal to consumers,
    >and cannot be financially sustainable. But most of all, critics have charged
    >that Open Source cannot innovate.
    >
    >There are few that would question Mozilla’s successes around those first three
    >”cannots” but the questions around innovation persist. Over the last few years,
    >Mozilla has been increasing its investments in projects that it hopes will
    >foster increased innovation both inside and outside of the browser. While it’s
    >still early in the game, and the processes and programs are still young, there
    >are good indications that this myth too will fall.
    >
    >Join Mozilla’s Asa Dotzler and Chris Beard as they discuss the processes of
    >innovation at Mozilla, including the Mozilla Labs program, the Mozilla add-ons
    >ecosystem, and the Mozilla Firefox web browser.
