Profiled (and then trolled) on Linux.com

At last month's Vancouver PHP Conference, local journalist Bruce Byfield gave me a quick interview about how I got involved in Free Software and Open Source. We chatted for a while about my time at MySQL, my bits of work in the PHP community and what I am currently up to. The interview turned into a profile for Linux.com that was published a few days ago.

I was a bit surprised to find that there have been a few anonymous trolls for the profile - I didn't think that there would be any comments on the profile.

Cool, you have an arch enemy! That must mean you have really made it. Most of us are far too unimportant to have anonymous detractors.

I wonder if there is a Web2.0 business model in that? Sign up at detractr.com and get a list of people to leave random insults about in wikipedia, blogs and mailing lists. Get paid $1 per random insult, bonus $1 if you call them a hippie.

If you sign up for the deluxe package, then you can have a rented mob congregate outside your house holding placards inscribed with the insults of your choice and chanting something about rhubarb.

A classic! I often wonder if there's a colony of trolls which make it their entire life purpose to post things like that… Oh wait. I forgot. There is.

    hmmm… slashdot anyone?

    Hey Luke,

Thanks for the support. Your idea is so advanced, it might even be Web 3.0. ;)

    Cheers!

Hi Zak, that's normal. If you staying in the wind, somebody wants to kick your shin.

Or if your are in the sun, sometimes you'll get a sunburn. But what is life alway in the shadow or as anonymous?

Your are not alone, we are there and respect and salute your work and person.

Thanks all! Maybe Luke is right - an anonymous arch-enemy seems to be a good thing for me.

It looks to me like both trolls are by the same person (distinctive style). You can't take that stuff seriously… though I know if that happened to me, I'd probably have a lump in my throat anyway.

That's all right, Zak: I was denounced to.

My reaction was to immediately put the comment into the Abuse file on my web site, along with other venomous comments that I've received.

    I got zero comments :)

I would never pay much attention to comments on sites like these. You are great :)

    Cheers,

    Hmmm Zak,

I didn't know the sub-species of troll known as "snotgurgle" had learned to read yet, but evolution is obviously still at work! I guess one must have taken a finger from his nose and learned to type with it! (The finger, not the nose!)
Now *that's* an accomplishment! I'm waiting for the interview!

I am still unreasonably angry about the troll. But… well, I'm your wife, I don't have to be reasonable about things like this. :)

Anonymous opinions aren't worth the paper they're printed on! These guys know nothing. Don't see them standing up and making the effort. Keep the faith Zak, your worth listening to.

    "Get a job you hippie!"
    ROFL.
..and I thought I was the only one people said that to. ;)
