PHP Con Day 1

Woke up early and re-worked part of my presentation. Realized that I did not have MySQL installed on the laptop. Panicked for a short amount of time. Tried to find a wireless network that I could reach. Gave up and hoped that I could find access or a something by the time my talk was scheduled.

A few hours later, dragged my groggy ass out of my room and made for breakfast.

Breakfast was sparse - the typical oxymoronic continental breakfast served at US conferences.

During breakfast, I complained about my state. Thankfully, Luke Welling had a CD with the source version of MySQL on it. After a bit of panic about a missing library, I got it compiling.

The compile finished during Rasmus' keynote about 1/2 hour before my talk. Just long enough to test the presentation and chill out. :)

Interestingly, after all this angst, I did not have to present the talk. The original talk was targetted at new programmers, but there were very few in the audience. This made me a bit nervous. Nothing like giving the right talk (perhaps) to the wrong audience… :)

A few minutes in, someone suggested that most of the people in the room knew the material that I was going over. So, I switched to a talk on optimizing MySQL - this seemed to make the audience happy. To try an take care of any beginners who did show up, I offered coaching for new users on the next day of the conference.

After the con. wrapped up for the day, Rasmus invited Jim, Shane and I over to his place for dinner. It was nice to get to meet Christine - she seems very cool.

Bleh. Need more sleep.
