OpenFest/Sofia III

The morning comes too early for Salle and Rumi. I feel much better - very

well in fact - and feel quite ready for the event.

We travel to the center of Sofia and into an area of attractive historical

buildings - churches, the parliament building, parks with weathered ruins

set in greened-over holes preserved from the bombing in World War II.

Passing a statue in the city center, Salle and Rumi tell me that it is a

fable made in post-communist times - a bronze statue of a woman with flowing

drapery who is partially gilded. The statue is meant to represent the spirit

of Sofia and replaced a statue of Lenin, who for a short while in the

confusion after the fall of communism, pointed visitors to a local hotel.

We travel to the hotel where the event will be held to have coffee and a bit
