Mozilla Foundation Report for January 2008
This is my report on activities related to the Mozilla Foundation for the month of January 2008. In the future, I'll return to posting weekly reports. For more information on the other foundation-related activities, see the status reports published by David Boswell, Frank Hecker and Gerv Markham.
This month has had an unusually strong focus on events. In part this is due to people catching up after the holidays, but is also strongly affected by my interest in getting the most out of our investment in events. Read on for full details.
Projects for the Month
Events
- Brought the private foundation wiki mostly up-to-date on upcoming events. Added info to aid planning and provide better control, including concise event overviews and cost summaries.
- Worked up a general plan to help us get good value from the events we participate in. The plan includes some thoughts on greening up our conference attendance and sponsorship.
- ajax-experience-2008-call-for-papers-details/">Ajax Experience 2008: Worked to help coordinate the participation of members of the Firefox accessibility project. This trip could provide a good opportunity for the accessibility team to work face-to-face for a few days.
- CommunityOne 2008: Submitted a session on Electronic Ombuds.
- FOSDEM 2008 »">FOSDEM 2008: Submitted a session on Electronic Ombuds for the Mozilla Dev Room (which was accepted).
- FOSSNUT (Free and Open Source Software Norwegian University Tour): Prepared by reviewing the foundation's work with Seneca College, in particular the Mozilla@Seneca wiki, David Humphrey's Mozilla@Seneca notes for the Mozilla Boston DevDay and Frank Hecker's Seneca College and open source education report.
- F2C: Freedom to Connect 2008: Organized Mozilla Foundation sponsorship for Suw Charman to attend the event. Frank Hecker and Gen Kanai will be attending as Mozilla representatives.
- Leadership by (Open) Innovation in the Telecoms, IT and Media Industries (No public URL yet): Developed abstract and started research for my Open Innovation and Open Source: Lessons Learned in the Mozilla Community session.
- OSCON 2008: Worked with Mozilla Corporation team on the general Mozilla presence at OSCON. Submitted the Age of Literate Machines, as well as sessions on Electronic Ombuds and Greening the Conference Circuit. I plan to attend FLOSS Foundations meetings at OSCON.
- Open Web Vancouver 2008: Submitted the Age of Literate Machines, as well as the Electronic Ombuds session.
- SCALE 6x: Made a draft plan for attending SCALE 6x. Arranged travel. Began practicing session. Began developing local contacts for related work in LA.
- Minor bits of work on eLiberatica 2008, Go Open 2008 (no public URL yet) and the PHP Quebec Conference 2008.
Grants (and related):
- Some light work on grants. Frank will include relevant notes in future reports (if the grants are approved by the board.)
- Along with Dave Shea, justdave, Frank and Gerv, helped sort out some confusion around the Bugzilla mascot. Found a good resolution of the problems that includes a revamp of the logo.
Public Communication
- Lab with Leo Laporte TV Show: I prepared and then presented a brief Firefox 3 segment on the show. Many thanks to the Mozilla Corporation team for their help. Additionally, I worked up a set of pitches for the Lab with Leo that focus on key aspects of the Mozilla Manifesto, as well as Free Software and Open Source.
Mozilla Manifesto
- Developed a rough plan for helping other organizations advance the Mozilla Manifesto in their activities.
- Met with John Robinson from the Center for Interactive Research on Sustainability to discuss how the Mozilla Manifesto relates to CIRS' activities, as well as to other related initiatives. I'll post notes from our meeting after John has a chance to review them.
Misc.
- I've worked up a decent setup for authoring podcasts and screencasts (though I do need to get a better microphone.) While producing recordings for their own sake is a large amount of effort, recordings that are based on existing presentations and materials are much easier to produce and provide us with an opportunity to make some of our materials accessible to those with restricted mobility, as well as the blind and deaf (once we add subtitles.)
- David Boswell, Frank Hecker, myself and others have started hanging out on the #foundation channel on irc.mozilla.org. Drop by if you have questions or comments.
- I'm in the process of moving my blog to a new server (and updating it to take advantage of some of the new features of Wordpress) – some links and feeds may break. Feel free to nudge me if you notice something awry.
Upcoming Events and Travel
