Impressions of Net Tuesday
I attended Net Tuesday (which is a regular event in Vancouver billed as “Social Media and Web Innovators come together with Social Change Makers and Nonprofits to mix, swap stories and ideas, and build new relationships”) for the first time tonight.
It was an enjoyable event. There were about seventy people gathered into the large space at the far end of Workspace. A few snacks adorned a small table near the hallway, but these were mostly untouched. Instead of noshing, the crowd had broken up into lively small conversation and scattered friendly greetings. I only knew a few people by name – Dale McGladdery, Eric Promislow, Eli van der Giessen, Jason Mogus, Joe Solomon and Kris Krug (who MC’d the event) – but this isn’t a bad thing. I’m glad to be able to meet new people.
There was a quick round of introductions consisting of just twitter name (or real names if one is untwittered) and favourite quote (or favourite words in a few cases.) The quotes are by and large optimistic and witty, with bits of Obama’s inauguration speech and quotes from Ghandi being common favourites. My favorite quote was attributed to anti-apartied activist Stephen Biko, “The most powerful tool of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed.” Interestly, about half of the crowd has a twitter account.
The event then launched into a set of rapid presentations (which Raul of hummingbird604.com did a great job of liveblogging.)
I skipped out before the evening was through, but enjoyed the event a good deal. I had a nice chat with Eric, learned some cool things about twitter and got a better feel for how a slightly broader audience views the Net and issues like net nuetrality.

Just loved the part where the intros are made using Twitter names.

I am trying so hard to “get” twitter, but I just don’t. Gary Vaynerchuk made frequent reference to it in his keynote at ASW and using it to leverage brand equity, but some of the inane banter that goes on between some of the popular users makes me feel like I am constantly hearing only one side of a conversation. I like the CNN breaking news, but I would never want to be introduced by my Twitter name.

Think of it as an online version of the water cooler or the neighborhood – a place where you run into friends, family and interesting strangers by chance. Just try setting up an account (that has private messages) and using it with your friends and family who are often online. You’ll be more in touch. Of course, there are complications – just like with the rest of life.
