OpenMind 2007: Monty on the Future (and Past) of Databases
After a break, Tommi Mikkonen of the Tampere University of Technology introduces Monty Widenius (who is, as most readers of this blog will know is one of the founders of MySQL AB)
Monty takes the stage wearing a suit - a nice suit - something I don't recall having seen before.
He starts with an overview [...]

OpenMind 2007: Standardization, Industry-Community Cooperations and Mobile Linux
After Carlos, Nils Faerber from LiPS (a Linux telephony consortium that includes telephony operators, hardware vendors and software vendors) takes the stage.
Nils looks much more like we image an Open Source developer to look - more like a character from User Friendly than a character from Dilbert.
He gives a high-level overview of the current state [...]

OpenMind 2007: Opening Plenary
It's 9:15 Finnish time. A bell is politely ringing the attendees into the main room. Attendees come in all shapes and sizes - business people wearing suits, programmers with wild hair and long goatees wearing suits, casually-dressed clean cut young people who are hard to identify as belonging to any discipline.

OpenMind 2007
I woke up to a dull-grey dawn. Clouds hung low over Tampere and the last wisps of a fine drizzle were coming down outside. I rushed into my running clothes and took a quick jog down to the lake the that the conference hotel is set against. The morning was perfect running weather - cool [...]
Shell-like aliases for Hiveminder
If you are nerdy (and, if you are reading this blog, that is probably the case), then you probably like the alias built-in for *nix shells.
If you also use Hiveminder, then you should be pretty happy, as Shawn over at Best Practical has added alias-like support to Hiveminder's IM interface.
The syntax is simple.
Create an alias [...]

Breakfast 2007-09-24, originally uploaded by zak_greant.
Breakfast today consisted of 100 grams of cooked baby bok choy, 100 grams of vinegared organic onion, an organic egg, 50 grams cooked lentils, 90 grams of organic apple and about a tablespoon of butter for cooking the bok choy.
The onions were a bit hard to face, as was the [...]
$gut–
In the mid-ninties, I went from a single, heartsick, nervous and twitchy young geek who ran about 30 minutes a day (and that weighted in at about 70 kilos) to a much happier and well-loved geek who spent a lot more time snuggling on the couch.
I also went from cooking to live to cooking for [...]

PHP Québec Conférence 2008
The good folks at PHP Québec are throwing another iteration of their annual PHP conference. It will be held from March 12-14 in the beautiful city of Montréal. As I've mentioned before, this is always a great conference.
Check the conference website out - you still have a few days before the call for participation ends [...]

Hiveminder Wiki
While the Best Practical team didn't seem to make much of a fuss about having set it up, there is now a wiki for their Hiveminder task management service. If you use Hiveminder, you should visit the wiki and contribute.
I've dropped a few things into the wiki, including suggestions for improvements to tagging and making [...]
